Towards a model of story puns
نویسنده
چکیده
There is a class of joke which consists of an anecdote, which is sometimes quite long and often has no inherently humorous content, followed by a ®nal line which is a distorted form of some well-known phrase, proverb or quotation. Usually this ®nal line purports to summarize or draw a moral from the preceding story. This genre has some unusual aspects, from the viewpoint of conventional claims about the attributes of jokes. These jokes also have certain structural or formal regularities, which suggest that it might be possible to de®ne a computational model of their production. We outline how this might be done, by decomposing the construction of such story puns into a sequence of stages; some of these are clearly manageable, others are less straightforward. We also make some observations about where such an endeavor would ®t within the broader ®eld of humor research.

متن کاملComputer generation of puns in Japanese
We have implemented a simple model of puns in a program (BOKE) which generates puns in Japanese, using linguistic information from a general–purpose lexicon. Our evaluation indicates that the puns generated by the program are of comparable quality to those generated by humans. BOKE differs from an earlier English-language system (JAPE) only in the lexicon and the templates used to generate the ...
متن کاملComputational Model of Puns
Humor plays an essential role in human interactions. Precisely what makes something funny, however, remains elusive. While research on natural language understanding has made significant advancements in recent years, there has been little direct integration of humor research with computational models of language understanding. In this paper, we propose two information-theoretic measures—ambigui...
متن کاملAutomatically Extracting Word Relationships as Templates for Pun Generation
Computational models can be built to capture the syntactic structures and semantic patterns of human punning riddles. This model is then used as rules by a computer to generate its own puns. This paper presents T-PEG, a system that utilizes phonetic and semantic linguistic resources to automatically extract word relationships in puns and store the knowledge in template form. Given a set of trai...
متن کاملScaffolding EFL Oral Performance through Story Maps and Podcasts and Students’ Attitudes toward it
The present study sought to explore the impact of story maps and audio podcasts as scaffolds on oral proficiency of Iranian EFL learners. The quasi-experimental study was launched with 36 EFL undergraduates in three groups by adopting a counterbalanced 3 3 Latin squared design. All participants were indiscriminately, but in a specified order, exposed to the three treatment conditions of story ...
